hello everyone. Tonight I must take up the serious topic of keyboarding. I realize that long gone are the days when kids take typewriting in seventh grade with Mrs. Graves at Central Intermediate but was that such a bad skill to encourage of the young? I now find myself in many internet cafe's with so many characters on the keys you can hardly discern what you are typing. Every person has their own style but the italian lady and her man friend next to me really seems to be a bit of a banger on the keys. She is THE fastest tow fingered hunt and pecker I have ever seen. As far as the all time fastest typer I have ever witnesses it would have to be Dr. Alix Bjorklund my former associate who had the most amazing skill I could have watched her at the computer for hours.

Anyway, Will and I are pulling out of Bangkok in the early morning for Bangkok. The suit fits fine and will be done when we get back. Hope all is well in the mean time.

leaving Bangkok

Hello everyone and thanks for tuning in to our blogspot. We are leaving tomorrow at the crack of dawn to catch the bus back to the airport and fly into Yangon/Rangoon. Our flight leaves Bangkok at 7 am so an early start indeed! We are ready for the next phase of the trip and will need to pass through Bangkok at least two more times. I do have a suit to pick up after all....

Yesterday was an awesome day. We went to the tailor and I was measured for a suit made of black cashmere. They will have it ready today after three for a final fitting an I will pick it up when we come back through on Feb 8th. After that we headed out for a massage. We both got an hour long thai massage that cost less than $6. I then went back for a salt scrub and had a very small thai lady scrub my whole body with warm oil then salt. There is not one patch of dry skin left on my body. I will also comment that this procedure set me back $17. Quite a savings from over $60 at 10K waves in SF. Draping and avoiding body parts is certainly different here in Thailand as well. Other than my face and the area of my body that a salt scrub would be kind of ouchy, EVERY other area was scrubbed and thoroughly I may add. I think Will should partake but he is not going there at this time.

It feels great to spend a little money and we are sleeping later and later. We have only skipped running one day, Yesterday. Today we headed back to the chinese park and ran much stronger. Could have been last night delicious dinner at a small indian restaurant near our guesthouse. Stuffed ourselves on Garlic Nan, aloo mutter and Will even had a chicken dish and lived to tell about it. All for less than $10. Got to love that.

We have not eaten breakfast but each bought half a pineapple on the street an had that. Fresh fruit is readily available for and costs about 30 cents. A very good deal and keeps the craving for a snickers away! Once we get to Burma there will no longer even be the temptation of a snickers or any kind of chocolate. We are down to our last two squares of a dark chocolate bar from trader joes that my friend Linda slipped in to my bag before leaving. That Linda alwasy has away of knowing what I will want and need later. Thanks Linda! From both Will and I.

Not really much to report other than that we are clean, well fed and resting a whole lot and doing a whole lot of talking. Who knew that a 39 year old gay lady and a 19 year old straight guy could travel so well together and have so mcuh to talk about. It is clear that the gift of gab gene comes from the Burch side of the family and we both were encoded with it. Mostly we pass the time talking about girls. ;) or specific girls I guess.

Anyone who wants a cat please speak up now I thnk I know a way to get a few out of the country. Seriously!

That's all from me for now, let's see is Will can tear himself away from facebook and jump on....
hmmm maybe later.

over and out until hopefully tomorrow if all goes well in Rangoon!

some fine points

Greetings all! Something Will forgot to mention about this am when we were sitting at the new joe eating breakfast and watching the same black cat attempt to take a shit in the same spot but was thwarted....in the background playing on the house stereo they were playing all the great old hits that Maxine used to enjoy. I really felt her with us this morning as we were laughing our belly laughs about the cat and remembering things to blog about yesterday. They were playing a compilation of Tony Orlando Tie a yellow ribbon round....; glen campbell like a rhinestone cowboy; kenny rogers and dolly parton islands in the stream and john denver take me home country roads. I am pretty certain I sang every hit while sitting on the counter in the even ing while Jenny, Betsy and Max were washing the dinner dishes. If not there, then max and I were singing these hits together while driving down M20 in the Bonnevile.

Anyway, some note worthy comments made by the Willster: he only wants to spend his money on intangible items like beer (this said while drinking beer at 4pm before we went off to dinner)
Then the most hysterical comment of all come in connection with the women with the black hast hawking the frogs...its true they are all short and compact and wearing long NBA style long shorts under their garb as Will pointed out. We decided they were a secret society of thai lesbian soccer wash ups who were now on khao san road tormenting tourists. May not sound funny to youall because you really need to see them yourself, but all these women have that hardened look about them that only the old dykey-dykes have about them....the more butch ones in America. Anyway, we are having the best possible time and at about three am as I was lying awake I decided I really did want a custom made execudrag suit so today we are off to find the indian man who talks about chakras and to get a fitting. Maybe we will take a tuk tuk there....

Also today I am getting a massage and a manicure and pedicure. Should put me back about five dollars. Yikes!

No running today.

Ciao everyone
Cody

... we shit you not.

the cost of a service is one you must sometimes just embrace. And perhaps its the shoestring budget we've grown into, but when we were told it would cost 70฿ for someone else to wash our laundry, we were upset. nevermind the fact that 70 bhat is only around 2 dollars- we just want cheap goods and services. I guess a dollar only goes so far anymore....

anyways- monday, january 12.

After our stint with the internet, the typical baugette breakfast at the New Joe guesthouse resturaunt, and then our cold showers, it was time to hit the town. We headed to drop off our laundry, and thinking we would be departing bangkok today (jan 13), we were hoping to get our laundry washed and back in the same day, and were also disspointed to hear that it would not be available until the following afternoon. So we dropped it back off in our room and then began the search for our tickets out of Bangkok, and into Burma. Following the advice of a friendly man in one of the ten thousands of internet cafes, we consoled AirAsia.com. Its kind of like the asian equivalent to cheaptickets or orbitz. We were delighted to find the flight would only cost us about 160 bucks, round trip! cheap!!!

So we bought our tickets. Departure from bangkok is now Thursday, Jan 15th (our time, people). Printed our tickets and dropped off our laundry (since we now had the time) and spent some time in the atrium of the guesthouse, reading and journaling.

(i'm skipping lunch becuase it consisted of a pinapple and a watermelon, consumed with a wooden stick infront of a 7-11)

DID some more walking about bangkok, then decided it was most necessary to sit and drink. We walked by a couple resutraunts (they all serve beer) and settled at our favorite, right in the middle of khaosan road. spent some time people watching and admiring the clans of people, backpackers, and peddlers. There are these ladies that walk around, wearing these black hats and outfits. they all carry these little wooden frogs with a small stick you can run along the back, producing a sound similar to the croak a real frog might make. There must be at least 250 million of these ladies, and during the half hour we spent at the table, we were approached by like 50 of them. They all look exactly the same, and you start to get confused. I began to investigate these ladies, trying to find some characteristic to help distinguish them. The only useful identifier, i discovered after minutes of intense research, were the stylings of their shorts. They alll wore different basketball shorts- some addidas, some plain black, some with micky mouse prints. hmm.

we ate dinner at may kai dees again. the food is unbeatable. the price is unbeatable.
wandered back to the guest house as khaosan life was beggining. it really is an interesting place. you should all come here.

anyways, as for the title of this blog...
while at breakfast this morning, at the new joe (so good....), the same black cat attempted to take a shit, in the exact same sopt, as yesterday. He was only stoped by the fierce voice and flailing arms of an employee. How Funny!

ok, much to do. much more later.

will here...

just adding on what a good time we are having. truley a needed break. everything in Bangkok starts to grow on you... the smell, the business, the people and their charm. Looking forward to the next couple of days.

thew long walk "off the beaten path" yesterday was much needed. i reminded us both, i think, that not everyone in bangkok is here to scam you. Walking by stores with thousands and thousands of golden buddhas of all sizes for sale, in a district free of english and white folk, was quite releaving.

really enjoying the cold showers ad the runs everyday. also, there has been this man in the internet cafe we frequet. He was on the phone, quite loudly, yesterday with his "mum" and today he is here agian. bangkok is quite the place.

move love to all. miss you all.

Making peace with the tuk tuk

So yesterday morning as I was taking my daily cold shower after yet another awesome run, I was thinking to myself how I really want this trip to be about making peace with Bangkok. This city can really suck the life out of you and you should move along quickly and get out as fast as you can. So I shared this with Wil that I wanted to find a way to keep these people and in the love and not want to yell explicatives at them. Then a very nice gentleman approached us as we were on our way to the Chinese Market. He explained that in the Thai paper there were elections starting and the Thai government was paying all the tuk tuk drivers to take toursts to the Tall Buddha, the lucky buddha, and the marble buddha. For $20 Baht! We were excited. I reminded Will of my earlier comment about finding peace and we immediately thought maybe this was the way..... sonn after a tuk tuk drove up and we happily jumped in. The driver took us to all the sites, then we asked him to take us to the TAT (the government travel agency) and the next thing we knew we were pulling up in front of a scammer travel agency. Now he was up to the old tricks. Then he took us to a tailor (reminiscent of the day before) we went into the tailor and actually had a wonderful conversation with the owner about chinese medicine and chakra's and hot yoga (I foudn six different locations in Bangkok to do Bikram's) anyway he did not even try to sell us a suit so now I actually want to have asuit made by this man and his team of tailors...maybe on the next pass through bangkok. Anyway, after the trip to the tailor we came out and said NO MORE stops take us home and he did not fight. And he did not pout. A grown man pouting is something I cna truly do without on any day let alone on my vacation.

Once we got back to our guest house we revised the day. We took a very long walk and found a few parks where loads of people work out (mostly chinese as it was in the chinese section of Bangkok) we also found a skate park and men playing a version of soccer with a smaller hard ball and a much smaller field ( actually a court). It turned out to be a great day and we enjoyed ignoring all tuk tuk drivers as they drove closely and commented "were you go?"

We headed out this morning to the chinese park and had a great run. They also have a whole area with tons of practical workout stations like log lifting and stuff. Great workout. We were going to work on sprinting but had nothing left in our legs. We have not been eating enough protein as most of it looks pretty nasty. After you have walked through the market and witnessed all the dead or nearly dead stuff and also noting the lack of refrigeration, (is that a word) then you tend to not want to eat flesh. Smell is also a factor but I wil spare you that description. Will is jonesing for a turkey sandwhich right now. It seems that everyday after we work out we talk about food for at least an hour. We have this in common, our love of food and great meals we have enjoyed.

We have also come to know that we share a love of the hanes white v-neck tshirt AND we wear the same size small! And, we both brought two on the trip! We can share clothes! Yesterday we both wore plaid shirts. Weird.

Last night we came up with a new plan that avoids the beach in thailand and has us going to Burma on Thursday. We will be buying our tickets today and landing in Rangoon on thursday. Then we will head to the beach shortly after that. The beach in Thailand is great but not as great as in Burma because no one is on the beach in Burma, you have it to yourself. So, we are making adjustments to travel plans as are needed.

Other noteworthy facts to report today....
I stepped in a pile of Dog shit on the way to the fitness park. Bummer. And after working out this morning we were sitting at the new joe guest house eating breakfast and watched a cat take a shit right next to us. We were laughing our asses off! Every time we see a cat (which is about every five feet) we always think about taking one home to Betsy and John and Lisa.

We are having a great time and seriously budgeting our time and money to get the full experience for the best possible price ... Yesterday we offered prayers to the buddha for safe travels and to our families and loved ones (we did not pour water over our heads though as so hopefully they are just as valid).

Thats all I have for now. Perhaps Will has a comment of two...

Nope, he is busy instant messaging through facebook to Melissa...

Bangkok part deux: taken hostage

Yesterday was a crazy assed day! We went in search of the cambodian embassy only to remember that it was saturday and all embassies are closed! Duh! We have vacation brain, we toil the day away occasionally asking "what time is it." each time with a little more enthusiasm. Anyway, against our better judgement we jumped on a tuk tuk ( a motorcycle with a bench seat back) and immediately regretted our decision. For those of you who are unaware of the notorious tuk tuk driver in Bangkok, they are all scammers. Somehow we thought we woudl be above this. the tuk tuk driver immediately took us to a local pagoda so we coudl go in and make prayers and pour water over our heads. we told him we were not interested in praying and ouring water and he seemed offended. We again stated that we wanted to drive by the cambodian embassy so that we could find it on Monday when they were open. He then drove us to a tourist center where we could book a trip to cambodia. again we stated we wanted to go to the cambodian embassy and he then took us to another tourist center to try and get us to book with another company. We were starting to get angry. He was going to these places because it is a game they play with unsuspecting tourists where they take you to a business they know and if you book a trip or buy an item they get akick back. we were not playing. He then took us to a clothing store where they custom make a suit for you. This was just too much. But this time Will and I decided to play. We chose each a suit we wanted, picked out the fabric and were at the stage of paying and being fitted when we finailly bailed. The idea of having fine suit custom made to your measurments souds awesome but what usually happens is you pick a fabric and pay for it and then they actually make yor garment from a lower quality fabric. Bait and switch at its best. Will almost had a gorgeous camel colored suit made of cashmere and silk. Lovely. Anyway, the tuk tuk driver was able to get a stamp and he seemed happy and we were happy and thought he woudl take us back to our hotel then he said he would take us to one more place and we flipped. We both be came angry with him and I forcefull said if he took us to one more place we woudl not get out of the tuk tuk. Our driver got quiet and sad and actually pouted. We explained to him that we hired him to take us to one place, the cambodian embassy and we still had not seen that one place. ASSHOLE. we finally got back to khao san road and decided to spend the rest of the afternoon drinking beer at an outside cafe. So that is what we did. then we went to dinner at Mai Kay Dee's (the cooking school we will attend) and then were home and in bed by 7pm. Will says the tuk tuk driver took it out of us. We then were both up by 530 and hit the road running for along run this am at 630. We ran through a local market and got to see all of the fish and pigs and cows that were being sold in pieces or alive. Sanitation and food preservation are a whole lot different here then back home. We both want to try the thai version of fish sticks which is a whole fish fried on a stick. The original fish stick!

Also, had a nice breakfast at the new joe guesthouse. fun times. every day is an adventure.

music: summer breeze, seals and crofts
sights: hoards of traffic, tiny people, images of the king.

bangkok, Baby!

We made it! Hello all, how are you? We are great. We arrived after midnight this morning and got dropped off on Khao San Road with all the other backpackers from all over the world. I asked two guys with backpacks at the airport if they were headed down here and they said yes and we shared a taxi. The taxi from the airport cost about $12 but with the four of us it was obviously cheaper. Cheap is the word here and making your money streeeetch is the game. The guys were named Derek and Eric and they were form Calgary. Eric was quick to make fun of my Detroit lions shirt and becuase he was sitting in between Will and I, I was unable to push him out of the moving car. We found a place on a back street to put up for the night that cost $450 Bhat, a little more than $11. Now we are moving to another location that is CHEAPER and more quiet. The disco acros sthe street was thumbing until afetr 5 am. Also, we both decided it would be really really nice to not shower in a bathroom that smelled like raw sewage.

Will had his first meal cooked on the street last night with me...some cheap version of oily pad thai and we have both lived to tell the tale. We are off to the cambodian embassy to see about a visa for entry to the country and to inquire about cooking school.

We loosely decided to take the following route....Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and then Vietnam. Think we have it planned out fairly well and will be moving on in another day or two. We also found out that a ticket to Singapore is about $50 US and we may try to put that on the agenda as well to be able to see myt friend and that shiney city.

Ok everybody, we are thinking about you (especially Melissa) and having a great time. Will is even picking his clothes up off the floor and everything and we have just finished run. He is a great work out partner!

Ciao for now

as a side note...I had an interesting experience this morning while out for a run that I feel really prepared me for the time in the future when Will and I will be trekking through the DMZ of Vietnam...  I was running across the small patch of grass in front of the hotel only to quickly realize that I was in a land mine zone.  A dog shit land mine zone!  People! Pick up your dog shit! Truly disgusting.  Anyway, peace to all. We have showered for the last time for the next three days and are off to the airport.

Adios
willandcody
Today Will and I are off to the exotic land of Los Angeles, California!  Unfortunately, when you book a flight through travelauction.com they route you in very interesting ways, so we will actually be staying overnight in LA, then fly out to Hong Kong tomorrow am.  We saved a lot of money bidding on the tickets, but it would have been more in the spirit of an adventure if we would be truly leaving the country today.  We shall make the best of this minor setback by going to Uptown and perhaps spending more money at the apple store.

Also, for all of you ABQ natives, Will has not been back in the land of enchantment for a decade but he can still appreciate the comfort of a trip to the Frontier! He was hungry last night when he arrived and it seemed the most logical place to take him.  We both enjoyed a breakfast burrito with green chile (even though I had eaten a few hours earlier at the flying star)...

I just dropped my friend Izzy off at the airport (she was occupying the other full size bed) and now it is time for more shut-eye.

Be well

Greetings everyone! I have collected Will from the airport and we are now spending our last night in the land of enchantment before flying out tomorrow am.  We are sharing the same full size bed at the Hampton Inn and have agreed that this is the last time on the the trip we will be spending this kind of money for shelter.... who needs sample size everything?  Please see the blog photo to confirm that we are in fact sleeping in the same bed... seems a little strange but soon we will be sleeping on thin bamboo mats that most likely are bed bug ridden, really cant wait!

sidenote: skip frontier airlines next time you fly. Peace and Chicken Grease.

goodnight everyone!

three days...

Will and I will be leaving in three short days. I have not spent even one moment trying to pack. Maybe I will do this tomorrow. I sure hope everything fits in my backpack...
